Biography

Moyer graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Theater and Film in 1994 and began touring as a stand-up comedian. Years later, wanting to capitalize on the success of God's Army, a feature film about LDS missionaries written and directed by Richard Dutcher, Moyer paired up with fellow BYU alums Kurt Hale and Dave Hunter and co-wrote The Singles Ward, a Mormon comedy movie aimed at Mormon audiences, which was released in 2002 and based on Moyer's own life experiences as a stand-up comedian and a single member of the LDS Church. He also co-wrote The R.M. and The Home Teachers, two more Mormon comedy films. Finally inspired by being from New Jersey and experiencing the culture shock of moving to Utah, John wrote, produced, directed, and acted in Mobsters and Mormons, a Mormon comedy that was released in 2005. In 2007, Moyer co-wrote The Singles 2nd Ward, a direct-to-DVD sequel to the 2002 film. Since that time, the interest in Mormon-based films has significantly declined and Moyer has not made another film. In 2011, he released The Real Life Singles Ward, a DVD documentary video off-shoot of the 2002 film, produced on a budget of $3,100[1].
